Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and over two dozen elected officials from New York have signed a letter demanding the release of Mahmoud Khalil. Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after participating in pro-Palestinian protests.
The letter, shared with City & State, criticizes the government for targeting students and immigrants who speak out against injustice. The officials urge Khalil’s return to his family in New York City and call for the removal of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from college campuses, emphasizing the need for Columbia University not to cooperate with immigration enforcement that endangers students’ safety.
Khalil, a green card holder married to a U.S. citizen, was arrested at his Manhattan home by DHS agents. They initially claimed his student visa and green card were canceled, but details around his arrest remain unclear.
A Palestinian American born in Syria, Khalil has been active in protests that have faced backlash, including accusations of antisemitism. Following an executive order from former President Trump, which targeted student visas for protesters, Khalil found himself under scrutiny from pro-Israel groups calling for his deportation. After his detention, Trump expressed approval and hinted at further actions against pro-Palestinian activists. Thankfully, a judge temporarily halted his deportation.
The letter was led by Assembly Member Claire Valdez and New York City Council Member Alexa Avilés. Valdez highlighted the importance of supporting the immigrant community and defending free speech rights. Many elected officials have shared their views on Khalil’s situation since the arrest.
Responses vary widely. New York Governor Kathy Hochul noted that a judge will determine the situation’s legality, expressing uncertainty about the facts. In contrast, Mayor Eric Adams delivered a confusing remark, implying threats without basis—his spokesperson later clarified that this statement didn’t relate to Khalil’s case.
Valdez doubts the federal government will respond, mentioning the current administration’s disregard for constitutional rights. However, she believes it’s crucial to show support for Khalil and his family. Along with Ocasio-Cortez, the letter also received endorsements from a range of notable elected officials, reinforcing their commitment to standing for justice and immigrant rights.
