Simon Fisher-Becker, a familiar face to fans of “Harry Potter” and “Doctor Who,” passed away at the age of 63 on Sunday. His husband, Anthony Dugdale, shared the news on social media, but no details about the cause of death have been provided.
Fisher-Becker was a skilled character actor who brought charm to various roles in film, theater, and television. He played the Fat Friar, the friendly ghost of Hufflepuff House, in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” However, it was his role as Dorium Maldovar in “Doctor Who” that marked a significant turning point in his career.
In 2014, Fisher-Becker reflected on this change, stating, “I was a jobbing actor for many years, but Maldovar changed everything.” Suddenly, casting directors were approaching him instead of the other way around.
Born on November 25, 1961, in London, Fisher-Becker discovered his passion for acting during a school production of “Oliver Twist.” He enjoyed performing so much that he eventually turned it into a career. Although he started in music, acting called to him after he fell into it unexpectedly.
Fisher-Becker took a leap into acting professionally after losing a government job. He juggled various roles, including theater manager and human resources manager, while pursuing his dream. A life-changing moment occurred in March 2009 when he was attacked at a gas station. That experience opened the door for him to audition for the role of Dorium Maldovar later that year.
As a lifelong fan of “Doctor Who,” which he watched growing up, he considered it a dream come true to appear on the show. Initially, he had a small part, but audiences loved him, leading to two additional appearances as Dorium Maldovar.
Throughout his career, Fisher-Becker appeared in numerous shows and movies, often in supporting roles. Some of his notable works include “Afterlife,” “Getting On,” and “Les Misérables.” His career showcased his versatility and talent.
Fisher-Becker once remarked, “You are always an audition away from something changing your life,” highlighting the unpredictable nature of acting. His journey from a jobbing actor to a beloved character in iconic series will leave a lasting legacy in the world of entertainment.
