Saturn has officially claimed the title of ‘moon king’ with 274 moons circling the gas giant. This impressive count isn’t just a small lead; Saturn now has almost twice as many moons as all the other planets in our solar system combined.
A team of astronomers recently made this exciting discovery of 128 new moons using the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. Just last year, Saturn had already regained its moon title with the addition of 62 newly discovered satellites, bringing its total to 145. In contrast, its closest competitor, Jupiter, has only 95 confirmed moons.
For years, Saturn and Jupiter have been in a friendly rivalry to see who has the most moons. But now, it seems Saturn has decisively won this contest. Edward Ashton, a postdoctoral fellow and lead researcher, stated, “Based on our projections, I don’t think Jupiter will ever catch up.”
This recent research spanned from 2019 to 2021, with the team revisiting the skies around Saturn between 2023 to confirm the new celestial bodies. Their efforts involved combining signals from different telescopes to improve the detection of these faint objects. The International Astronomical Union has recognized their work and the newly discovered moons.
Interestingly, these newly found moons are classified as “irregular.” This means they likely originated from larger moons that broke apart due to violent collisions, either with other moons or with passing comets. Most of these moons are located near the Mundilfari group, which may have been the site of a collision within the last 100 million years.
As Ashton puts it, “Our carefully planned multi-year campaign has yielded a bonanza of new moons that tell us about the evolution of Saturn’s irregular natural satellite population.”
However, for the time being, the team feels they’ve reached the limits of current technology for spotting new moons around Saturn and other distant planets like Uranus and Neptune.
In today’s context, this finding underscores the dynamism and complexity of our solar system. It prompts us to consider the countless cosmic events that shape planetary systems. As we learn more about these moons, we also gain insight into the history of our celestial neighborhood.
