Shearer slams ‘terrible decision’ as Scotland crash out of Euro 2024

Steve Clarke’s side crashed out of the tournament after a 1-0 defeat in Stuttgart, with Hungary scoring in the 11th minute of stoppage time.

Scotland needed to win to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

But Clarke’s man managed just one shot on target as their hopes of progressing faded away.

However, things could have been so different had Scotland been awarded a penalty when Stuart Armstrong was upended in the area.

The former Southampton man was put through on goal by Scott McTominay and was about to pull the trigger at goal when he was tripped from behind.

Despite loud calls, the referee waved play on and VAR saw no reason to intervene.

Speaking in the BBC Studio, Shearer felt the decision cost Scotland.

‘I thought the referee gave a terrible decision when Scotland should have had a penalty. For me it was a penalty all day,’ said Shearer.

‘Clear penalty for me. I think the assistant had a great view. It’s a terrible challenge. He gets caught and takes him out. His right knee on to his calf. Clearly. 

‘That for me is a clear, clear penalty. I think that is a clear and obvious error. Clearly he’s taken him down.’

David Moyes, the former West Ham boss, was sitting alongside Shearer in Berlin and agreed with the Newcastle legend.

‘I think that’s a penalty kick as well,’ he said.

‘That’s a reckless challenge from the defender. We were all shouting here that VAR will at least check that.’
