Stanford Welcomes Former Colts Coach Frank Reich as New Interim Head Coach

Stanford has named Frank Reich as the interim football coach for the 2025 season. The announcement was made early on a Monday morning after initial reports surfaced from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Reich has a noteworthy background; he previously coached the Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers.

Reich also has a connection to Stanford through Andrew Luck, the university’s general manager and former No. 1 NFL draft pick. Luck praised Reich as an excellent leader and mentor. “His values align seamlessly with our vision for this program,” Luck stated, highlighting Reich’s role in supporting the growth of student-athletes both on the field and in life.

Despite his prominent NFL experience, this marks Reich’s first role as a college coach. He will lead the team for one season, with plans for Stanford to conduct a national search for a permanent coach after the 2025 season. This decision comes on the heels of the university’s move to fire coach Troy Taylor, who faced investigations for alleged misconduct.

The Stanford football program has faced struggles in recent years, with no more than four wins in any season over the past six years. Luck, reflecting on his time with Reich, noted that there is no manual for becoming a head coach; it requires prioritizing tasks and understanding how to seek support. This insight may guide both Luck and Reich as they navigate this transitional period for the football program.

Currently, Stanford is still searching for an athletic director after Bernard Muir’s departure. Luck is working directly with university president Jonathan Levin. Together, they will chart the future path for Stanford football and the selection of a long-term head coach. This interim role allows them to consider their options carefully.

As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Reich and how he shapes the future of Stanford football, especially in a pivotal time of change within the college sports scene.
