On Tuesday morning, investigators realized that an ATM card belonging to at least one of the victims was used at a financial institution in Atwater, California, which is about 9 miles northwest of Merced, the sheriff’s workplace stated.

It is unclear whether or not the person in custody is the one who used that card, Britton stated.

The suspect in custody was convicted in 2005 in a case involving armed theft and false imprisonment and was paroled in 2015, Warnke stated.

In that earlier case, the person acted alone and knew the victims, based on Warnke.
