The State government has determined to give ration cardholders ₹1,000 each in money as a Pongal present.

“We have not yet decided whether Pongal gift hampers should be given and, if yes, what should be their composition,” a senior official advised The Hindu.

Even if the government chooses to present the present hampers, it might present uncooked rice and sugar, however it isn’t receptive to the thought of supplying gadgets similar to jaggery and sugarcane, all of which have to be procured, the official stated.

Ordinarily, the money element is given to rice-drawing ration cardholders, who account for about 2.19 crore playing cards.
