Troubleshooting Chromecast (2nd Gen) & Audio: How to Fix ‘Untrusted’ Casting Issues During Outages

Many users of Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio are facing issues. They can’t cast audio or video content.

Update 3/10: Google has acknowledged the problem with these devices and is working on a solution.

Original 3/9: A warning message keeps popping up for users: “Untrusted device: [name] couldn’t be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware.” This message appears in apps like YouTube when casting.

There’s no way to bypass this alert. Restarting or resetting the devices won’t help. However, the screensaver feature that shows Google Photos and time still works.

Interestingly, newer models like the Chromecast (3rd gen) and Ultra are not affected by this issue.

The current “Untrusted device” message has led to concerns that Google might be discontinuing support for these older models. However, there have been no official announcements about that. Google had previously announced deprecation for the first-generation Chromecast in May 2023, but it still works today.

Hopefully, Google will roll out a fix soon.

The Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio are among Google’s oldest devices, both launched in September 2015. They currently use the 1.56.x firmware version.
