China’s President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden will attempt to hold a lid on tensions between the world’s high two economies subsequent 12 months, as they give attention to domestic challenges.
The two leaders met last week on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ assembly in San Francisco after the worldwide rivalry between the world powers got here to a head earlier this 12 months.

Xi and the Chinese Communist Party are grappling with slowing development on this planet’s second-largest economic system that has been roiled by a crisis in its real estate sector.
“Xi Jinping wants to fix his economy, he doesn’t need the problem exacerbated by a continued spiral of trade and technology tensions with the U.S.,” Wilford mentioned. “And similarly, the Biden administration has an election to deal with and they don’t need to be distracted by Beijing.”
Biden, 80, is dealing with underwhelming approval ratings, and is trailing Donald Trump in polls in a possible rematch on the U.S. presidential elections in November 2024. Many have cited Biden’s age and his dealing with of the economic system as two of his biggest weaknesses.
Xi instructed a gathering of American enterprise executives final week that the U.S. and China have to choose between being adversaries or partners — feedback that contrasted with Biden’s strategy of pursuing strategic competitors with Beijing by limiting exports of superior U.S. tech to China, whereas searching for areas of cooperation.
