Crozer Health, based in Chester, Pa., is in a tough spot. They recently stated that no final decision has been made about the future of their two hospitals in Delaware County, even though there are plans to possibly shut them down.
The uncertainty has left employees, patients, and the community feeling anxious. “Everybody is up in the air, unsure about what’s happening,” said Rex Haye, an employee at Crozer Chester.
Crozer’s owner, Prospect Medical Holdings, has indicated that they only have funds to keep the hospitals operating until March 14. This California-based company filed for bankruptcy protection earlier in the year, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General has raised concerns about the management of Crozer Health.
To keep the hospitals open, $20 million from the county and state has been allocated, overseen by an external consultant. This temporary solution has raised alarms about the potential crisis in emergency services, especially along the I-95 corridor. Many rallied with employees and patients to voice their concerns.
Governor Josh Shapiro weighed in, emphasizing the need for other healthcare providers in the area to step up. He pointed out that if Crozer shuts down, local hospitals like those in the Penn and Main Line Health systems will need to absorb the extra patients.
Shelly Buck, president of Riddle Hospital, which is just five miles away from Crozer Chester, has been preparing for an increase in patients. “We are ready for the added volume,” she confirmed. They have made plans to ensure they have enough space, equipment, and supplies for any incoming patients.
Penn Medicine also reassured that they are prepared to help any affected patients. They’ve committed to working with other regional healthcare providers to ensure a smooth transition if closures happen.
A meeting in Harrisburg is scheduled soon, where all involved parties will discuss the next steps. Additionally, a court hearing about the proposed closure will take place on Tuesday, which could provide more clarity on the situation.
