This exciting news follows a historic moment for NASA’s Perseverance rover, which recently captured images of glowing green auroras on Mars. It’s the first time we’ve seen such auroras from the surface of another planet.

What triggered this? On May 14, an intense solar flare, classified as X2.7, erupted from the sun. This was the biggest flare so far this year, sending out a surge of energy and particles at incredible speeds. The resulting coronal mass ejection (CME) is expected to reach Mars’ atmosphere on May 18, potentially leading to a global aurora display. Interestingly, Earth is not in the path of this CME.

However, this time, Perseverance’s instruments observed visible green auroras. “We chose a strong CME that could push many charged particles into Mars’ atmosphere,” said Elise Knutsen, a researcher involved in the study. “That made it possible to capture this vibrant display.” This development opens up exciting possibilities for future observations and research, especially for astronauts who might venture to Mars someday.

Auroras on Mars aren’t simply mini versions of Earth’s. They differ because Mars has a weak magnetic field and a thin atmosphere. This means the auroras here result mainly from solar energetic particles colliding with atmospheric particles. These collisions create the stunning glow that could fill the night sky.

Currently, we are nearing the end of solar maximum—a peak period in the sun’s 11-year cycle when activity is at its highest. Even as we approach this decline, we can still expect significant solar events in the near future.
