Many employees at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have been given a choice to leave their jobs in exchange for $25,000. They must decide by March 14. This offer was sent to a large portion of HHS’s 80,000 workers, including those at the CDC, NIH, and FDA.
The HHS has a massive budget of about $1.7 trillion, mainly used for health care services like Medicare and Medicaid. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. mentioned on Fox News that he has a list of employees he wants to let go. He reassured those involved in good public health practices that they have nothing to worry about. However, he suggested that those aligned with the pharmaceutical industry might want to consider leaving.
It’s uncertain how these job cuts will affect HHS’s work on urgent health issues like avian flu and measles outbreaks. The government allows agencies to offer these buyouts to help streamline their staffing during times of restructuring. Recently, President Trump warned his Cabinet that they need to make cuts or someone else, like Elon Musk, would do it for them.
