Unlocking Progress: ACReSAL’s 7-Day Lagos Retreat to Enhance Project Implementation – Insights from EnviroNews on Climate Action and Renewable Energy

The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project is holding an important retreat to review its progress and set future goals. This gathering is taking place in Lagos from May 12 to May 17, 2025.

Abdulhamid Umar, the National Project Coordinator, welcomed key stakeholders, including ministers from various sectors like Environment and Agriculture. He noted the importance of collaboration among representatives from the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The ACReSAL project, running from 2022 to 2028, focuses on improving landscape management practices in Northern Nigeria. It aims to tackle issues like poverty, low literacy, and poor agricultural productivity. As of now, about 70% of the project’s initiatives have been rolled out, showing a promising start.

Dr. Joy Iganya Agene, the Task Team Leader, emphasized that the retreat is crucial for identifying gaps in project performance and enhancing the understanding of how the project operates across participating states. She highlighted the need for policy development and strategic management plans to ensure sustainability.

With challenges such as climate change becoming more pressing, the retreat is timely. A recent study indicated that over 80% of rural households in Northern Nigeria are affected by climate impacts, stressing the need for effective resilience strategies.

Stakeholders will also discuss ways to make project procedures more efficient and state-specific, allowing solutions to be tailored to local needs. Insights from this retreat could align with ongoing efforts in sustainable development, reflecting a global shift towards more adaptive approaches in agriculture and land management.

At the end of the retreat, key takeaways will focus on building stronger capacities among stakeholders and refining actions to address future challenges more effectively. The ACReSAL project is fully backed by the Federal Government of Nigeria and funded by the World Bank, reinforcing its significance in the region.
