Brussels, June 10 (IANS) – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently spoke with the Indian community in Belgium and Luxembourg about the Indian government’s efforts to combat cross-border terrorism and promote national progress.
During a lively discussion, he highlighted the growing relationship between India and Belgium, as well as India’s engagement with the European Union.
“Terrorism isn’t confined to one country,” he stated. “It’s a global challenge. But in India, we face terrorism that’s often backed by state policies from other countries. This is something Europe generally doesn’t see.” He pointed specifically to cross-border terrorism supported by Pakistan, emphasizing how it has affected India more than any other nation in recent years.
Jaishankar referenced Operation Sindoor, which targeted key terrorist hubs in Pakistan. “For decades, these places have orchestrated attacks against India. This was a decisive message: we will locate and handle terrorists, no matter where they hide.”
He also underscored the importance of strengthening ties between India and Europe. “You living in Belgium, at the heart of Europe, understand how these global dynamics are shifting,” he said. Europe is increasingly looking to deepen partnerships with India, he noted, as both regions seek greater self-reliance. This aligns with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, which encourages self-sufficiency.
There’s a parallel growing in Europe, too, as it recognizes the need to tackle its own challenges independently. Jaishankar believes this shift in mindset can pave the way for stronger international ties.
He praised the Indian diaspora for their invaluable contributions globally. “Under PM Modi’s leadership, the Indian government values our diaspora as key partners in connecting with the world,” he remarked.
Jaishankar is visiting France, Belgium, and EU institutions from June 8 to 14 to further enhance India’s cooperative efforts in various sectors, including trade, green energy, and technology.
Recent statistics show that India’s trade with Belgium has seen significant growth, reflecting the increasing economic ties. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, bilateral trade between India and Belgium reached approximately $11 billion in 2022, marking a noticeable rise from previous years.
Jaishankar’s engagement with the Indian community underscores a broader trend: as global challenges evolve, countries like India and nations in Europe are finding common ground and working together toward shared goals.
