On February 8, healthcare organizations called on the Trump administration to restore crucial data on the CDC and FDA websites. Recently, over 1,000 pages of health data were removed during a federal data cleanup.

While some pages have been restored, many are still missing. This has raised concerns among healthcare groups about the impact on healthcare quality across the country. The American Cancer Society noted that many essential government data sets were either missing or restored with important information redacted.

Reports also surfaced about some federal research papers being pulled from journals for administrative review, which could stall vital research efforts.

Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick, the interim CEO of the American Cancer Society, emphasized the need for consistent data access.” He urged the administration to maintain comprehensive data collection without imposing unnecessary regulations. Access to accurate data is vital for cancer research and progress in treatment.

Furthermore, the Association of Health Care Journalists pointed out that data related to HIV was among the halted information. Some key HIV statistics and reports have now been restored, but the suspension raised alarm.

One more troubling event was the two-week pause in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), which has been published consistently since 1960. A member of Congress, Senator Dick Durbin, stressed the necessity of timely health information for doctors and the public. He demanded that the administration resume MMWR publications immediately to prevent unnecessary suffering and loss of life.

The MMWR resumed publication on Thursday, addressing the impact of recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area, with the previous report dated January 16.

As of now, the White House has not commented on the data removals or the delay in the MMWR.
