CBS has officially canceled its long-running show “S.W.A.T.” after eight seasons and 163 episodes. This decision was communicated to the producers and cast on Thursday. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the show has faced cancellation. It’s gone through this cycle three times, leaving fans unsure if this is truly the end.
“S.W.A.T.” stars Shemar Moore as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. The show was resurrected for Season 8 after CBS had initially decided that Season 7 would be its last. It also faced cancellation after Season 6 before being brought back for another season. Each time, CBS worked with producers to create a deal that would allow the show to continue.
This year, “S.W.A.T.” was given a full order for 22 episodes, with 13 already aired and nine remaining. Despite efforts to keep the series alive, this cancellation might be final. Showrunner Andrew Dettman expressed his sadness, stating that working with the talented cast and crew has been a great honor. He praised their dedication and hard work over the years.
Alongside Moore, the series features Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, and Niko Pepaj. The production is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and CBS Studios, with several notable executive producers, including Shawn Ryan and Justin Lin.
Shawn Ryan reflected on the privilege of working on “S.W.A.T.” for eight seasons, thanking fans and the cast while spotlighting the crew’s tireless efforts that contributed to the show’s success.
“S.W.A.T.” is inspired by the original series created by Robert Hamner, which aired for one season on ABC from 1975 to 1976.
Recently, CBS also pulled the plug on “FBI: Most Wanted” and “FBI: International.” However, the network renewed several shows last month, including “NCIS” and “Fire Country.” There are also new series on the horizon, such as a spinoff of “Blue Bloods.”
