Will “A Minecraft Movie” conquer the box office?

Warner Bros. and Legendary are betting big on this fan-favorite video game adaptation. Initial estimates suggest the film could earn between $70 million and $80 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. However, thanks to strong ticket pre-sales, some believe it might even reach $90 million. Warner Bros. is more conservative, predicting around $65 million. When accounting for international ticket sales, “A Minecraft Movie” could kick off with a total of $135 million to $150 million globally. With a production cost of $150 million, it comes with high expectations.

One major factor in its favor is strong interest from a wide range of viewers. The game’s interactive charm and nostalgia resonate with multiple generations, which could translate into significant box office numbers. Although not all video game adaptations achieve success—just ask the creators of “Borderlands”—”Minecraft” seems poised to break the mold. It has more in common with successful films like “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Uncharted” than its unsuccessful counterparts. While it may not reach the billion-dollar heights of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed $1.3 billion, it doesn’t need to in order to be considered a win.

The current state of movie theaters makes this release crucial. Attendance numbers are struggling. According to Comscore, ticket sales are down 10.9% from 2024 and a staggering 39% compared to 2019. Warner Bros. could really use this hit after two significant flops in recent releases.

“Our advanced ticket sales have been promising, and this film is likely to turn spring break into a family-friendly theater experience,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. global distribution head, at CinemaCon.

Directed by Jared Hess, known for “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre,” “A Minecraft Movie” stars big names like Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks. The story follows misfits who stumble into a blocky universe led by a skilled crafter named Steve (voiced by Black). Despite mixed reviews, many believe the film’s success won’t solely depend on critics’ opinions.

Prominent film critic Owen Gleiberman from Variety praised Jack Black’s energetic performance and Hess’ unique storytelling style. “He doesn’t take things too seriously, which gives the movie an appealing vibe,” Gleiberman noted in his review.

As of now, “A Minecraft Movie” shows promise for moviegoers eager for a fun escape. With the continued evolution of video game adaptations, it may well set a new standard for future projects.
