11-Year-Old Girl Uncovers the Largest Marine Reptile Ever Discovered!

Strolling along a beach can lead to unexpected surprises, especially if you’re lucky like Ruby Reynolds and her dad, Justin. During a day of fossil hunting in Somerset, England, they discovered a massive bone—over 6½ feet long! This relic dated back 202 million years to the final days of the Triassic Period.

At that time, Britain was largely underwater, home to giant marine reptiles. Their dominance came to an end during a mass extinction, leaving just a few bones to tell their tales—until now.

A Remarkable Find

In May 2020, while exploring the mudflats at Blue Anchor, Ruby stumbled upon a bone fragment, double the size of what Justin found. Their excitement reached paleontologist Dean Lomax at the University of Bristol. He linked this discovery to another jaw fragment unearthed by a local collector in 2016.

Lomax remarked, “What we’d hoped for… was indeed correct.” The fragments were part of a new species, Ichthyotitan severnensis, a name that means “giant fish lizard from the Severn.”

A Sea Monster

Scientists believe Ichthyotitan severnensis was colossal, possibly stretching up to 82 feet long—about the size of a blue whale. But it wasn’t just the size that intrigued researchers. They found that the bone structures matched what is seen in other large ichthyosaurs, hinting at a unique growth pattern unlike other reptiles.

The ocean during the Triassic was rich in food sources. Giant squid-like creatures thrived, feeding the massive hunters like Ichthyotitan. This marine reptile likely had a streamlined body, which helped it sail through open waters like a torpedo.

An Insight into the Triassic Era

The Triassic Period was a fascinating time. Continents had fused into what we now know as Pangaea. The climates were extreme, swinging between droughts and heavy rains. Biomechanist Kelsey Stilson notes, “There were things we can’t even imagine from the past.” The evolution of creatures like Ichthyotitan highlights this remarkable period.

It’s worth noting that after the Triassic, ichthyosaurs never reached such vast sizes again. Scientists believe that the rise of new marine predators and ecological changes led to their decline.

The Legacy of Ichthyotitan

The last ichthyosaurs went extinct about 94 million years ago, making room for mammals to evolve into massive ocean dweller—whales. Today’s blue whales can surpass 100 feet and weigh 180 tons, echoing the legacy of their ancient counterparts.

As the cliffs of Somerset continue to erode, new fossils may emerge. Each discovery brings us closer to understanding life in a time when giants roamed the seas. Lomax hopes that with more exploration, we might uncover complete skeletons of these ancient creatures, adding more chapters to the story of our planet.
