The Ogasawara Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo, are a striking example of how delicate island ecosystems can be. Human activities like deforestation and the introduction of invasive species have pushed unique wildlife to the brink of extinction. One particularly endangered species is the red-headed wood pigeon (Columba janthina nitens), found only here.

By 2008, only about 80 of these pigeons remained. Their decline was mainly due to habitat loss and an unexpected threat: feral cats. These cats, which were brought in over the years, became fierce predators of the nesting birds. Efforts to remove them were met with skepticism; few expected the ecological rebound that would follow.

In just three years after initiating a cat eradication campaign on Chichijima, part of the Ogasawara chain, the pigeon population surged. Numbers climbed from 111 to 966 adults, and juvenile pigeons increased from 9 to 189, according to a study in Communications Biology. This rapid recovery is unusual for species with low genetic diversity, which often suffer from inbreeding.

Interestingly, recent studies shed light on why red-headed wood pigeons seem to defy the odds. Despite their inbreeding, they carry fewer detrimental genetic mutations compared to their more diverse relatives, the Japanese wood pigeon. It appears that over centuries, harmful mutations have been gradually purged, allowing them to adapt and thrive despite a lack of genetic variety.

Dr. Daichi Tsujimoto from Kyoto University, who led the study, highlighted that small populations can sometimes adapt well under certain conditions. This aspect of genetic purging is emerging as an intriguing phenomenon in conservation science. A study showed that over 80% of the island pigeons’ genome is homozygous, typically a sign of extinction risk, yet these birds demonstrated no severe signs of genetic deterioration.

Other island species have shown similar resilience, including the island fox and the northern elephant seal, which have rebounded with little evidence of inbreeding-related issues.

Still, caution is advised. Dr. Cock van Oosterhout, a population geneticist, warns that genetic purging isn’t a guaranteed solution for all small populations. Each situation varies based on historical factors, the nature of mutations, and survival dynamics.

While the immediate outlook for the red-headed wood pigeon is encouraging, scientists remain cautious. Low genetic diversity could hinder their ability to adapt to emerging threats like new diseases or the impacts of climate change. Similar vulnerabilities face species like the Seychelles paradise flycatcher, even after undergoing genetic purging.

The story of the red-headed wood pigeon teaches us valuable lessons about conservation. It emphasizes the importance of addressing threats and understanding the intricate balance of ecosystems.
