Anora took home the coveted Best Picture award at the 2025 Oscars. The ceremony, held on Sunday night, celebrated a variety of achievements in film.
This ceremony saw Anora emerging as the standout film of the night, snagging five awards. Mikey Madison earned the title of Best Actress for her performance, while Sean Baker won multiple awards including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing for his work on Anora.
In the acting categories, Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist. Kieran Culkin received the Best Supporting Actor award for A Real Pain. Zoe Saldaña made history as the first American of Dominican descent to win an Academy Award, claiming Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez.
Latvia celebrated its first Oscar win with Flow, awarded Best Animated Feature. The documentary feature award went to No Other Land, while Brazil celebrated its first Oscar win with I’m Still Here as Best International Feature Film. Peter Straughan received the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Conclave.
Paul Tazewell made history as the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design, also for Wicked, which took home Best Production Design.
Several other films also had multiple wins. The Brutalist was recognized for Best Cinematography and Best Original Score, while Dune: Part Two claimed awards for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Emilia Pérez also won for Best Original Song with “El Mal.” Best Makeup and Hairstyling was awarded to The Substance.
The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, were broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The night honored not only the nominees and winners but also paid tribute to the heroes and victims of the recent wildfires in Los Angeles.
The show kicked off with a dynamic performance from the cast of Wicked, featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Additional musical tributes included performances by Doja Cat and Lisa of Blackpink, celebrating the legendary music of James Bond films. A poignant tribute to Quincy Jones was led by icons like Queen Latifah and Whoopi Goldberg, with the Los Angeles Master Chorale also making a special appearance.
