Anora snagged the coveted Best Feature award at the 40th Independent Spirit Awards, held Saturday. The film also celebrated two more wins: Sean Baker took home Best Director, and Mikey Madison was recognized for Best Lead Performance.
In other categories, Jesse Eisenberg won Best Screenplay for A Real Pain, with Kieran Culkin receiving Best Supporting Performance for the same film. Culkin, currently starring in Glengarry Glen Ross on Broadway, was absent from the ceremony.
The breakout star Maisy Stella won Best Breakthrough Performance for her work in My Old Ass. Jomo Fray’s exceptional work in Nickel Boys earned him Best Cinematography, while Hansjörg Weissbrich took home Best Editing for September 5.
The award for Best International Film went to Flow, and Dìdi won Best First Feature. Sean Wang, the writer-director of Dìdi, was also awarded Best First Screenplay. No Other Land was named Best Documentary, and Girls Will Be Girls won the John Cassavetes Award, celebrating a feature film made for under $1 million.
On the television front, Shogun earned the title of Best New Scripted Series. In the same category, Baby Reindeer had a strong showing with three acting awards. Richard Gadd won Best Lead Performance, while Nava Mau and Jessica Gunning received Best Supporting and Best Breakthrough performances, respectively. Hollywood Black was awarded Best New Nonscripted or Documentary Series.
Aidy Bryant returned as the host of this year’s Spirit Awards, which took place by the beach in Santa Monica. The event was streamed online for fans to enjoy. The Robert Altman Award was given to His Three Daughters, recognizing its director, casting director, and ensemble cast. Additionally, How to Die Alone was acknowledged for having the Best Ensemble Cast in a new scripted series.
The Spirit Awards started recognizing television shows in 2021 and introduced gender-neutral acting categories in 2022. During the event, tributes were paid to Josh Welsh, former Film Independent president, who passed away earlier in the year.
