The awards ceremony featuring filmmakers

The Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature went to “No Other Land.” This powerful film was created by a team of four Palestinians and Israelis working together.

During their acceptance speeches, the filmmakers addressed the ongoing struggles faced by people in Gaza and the West Bank. Their message came at a crucial time, following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that released hostages taken during the attacks on October 7, 2023.

Palestinian journalist Basel Adra, now a new father, voiced his hopes for a better future for his daughter. He wished for her not to experience the same fears he faces daily, like the threat of home demolitions in his community.

“We call on the world to take serious actions to stop the injustice and to stop the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian people,” Adra said.

Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham emphasized their unity, saying, “together our voices are stronger” as both Palestinians and Israelis working on the film.

About the Documentary: “No Other Land” tells the story of Masafer Yatta, a group of villages in the West Bank, where Adra’s family still resides. The film portrays the harsh realities of life there, including destroyed homes, violence, and the resilience of families trying to survive amid adversity.

Despite its critical acclaim, the documentary has struggled to find American distributors, according to the filmmakers.

Since Israel increased its military actions in the West Bank in late January, about 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced, just as the fighting in Gaza began to ease.

More from the speeches: Abraham shared how they live in different legal systems, stating, “I am free under civilian law, while Basel is under military laws that control his life.” He spoke of the need for a political solution that respects the rights of both peoples.

“Why? Can’t you see that we are intertwined? My people can be truly safe if Basel’s people are truly free and safe?”

CNN’s Leah Asmelash, Jeremy Diamond, Abeer Salman, and Kareem Khadder contributed reporting.
