2025 Flood Predictions: Join NOA’s Essential Awareness Campaign for Rural Communities | AIT LIVE

Following predictions of significant flooding in 2025 by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has kicked off a nationwide Flood Mitigation Campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness about flooding and improve public preparedness.

The campaign launched in Paikon-Kore Community, Gwagwalada Area Council, highlighted the fact that more than 1,000 communities in Nigeria face high flood risks. Emeka Egbugara, the Director of Environment, Climate, and Energy at NOA, spoke about how Gwagwalada is particularly vulnerable due to heavy rainfall and rapid urbanization.

Experts emphasize the importance of community collaboration in managing flood risks. Kunle Awojemila from the Federal Ministry of Environment pointed out that sharing knowledge at the grassroots level can help communities better prepare for potential flooding.

The 2025 Annual Flood Outlook indicates that 1,249 communities in 176 local government areas across 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory are at risk. This data shows an urgent need for action as urban areas continue to grow.

Historically, Nigeria has faced recurrent flooding, with events in 2012 and 2015 causing significant damage. Experts warn that climate change is increasing the frequency of such disasters. A recent survey revealed that nearly 70% of Nigerians are concerned about climate-related flooding—an indication that public awareness is growing.

The ongoing campaign aims not just to inform but also to provide practical safety tips and strategies for dealing with flood risks, making it an essential step in fostering resilience among vulnerable communities.
