Understanding the Tournament
The NCAA Division I baseball tournament consists of 64 teams. It begins in May with a series of matches that narrow the field to eight. Those eight then travel to Omaha to compete in the College World Series. There, they go through double-elimination rounds until one team is crowned the champion in a best-of-three finals series.
The first tournament took place in 1947, originally featuring only eight teams. Over the years, the tournament has grown significantly in scale and excitement.
Selection of Teams
Teams qualify through two main paths. There are 31 automatic berths awarded to conference champions and 33 at-large selections determined by the NCAA Selection Committee. This structure has been in place since 2014.
Men’s College World Series History
The MCWS has a rich history. Tennessee claimed the title in 2024, beating Texas A&M in a thrilling series. This victory was notable as Tennessee was the first number one seed to win since 1999.
As the tournament approaches, fans are gearing up for what promises to be another unforgettable baseball season. Enjoy the games!
