Louisville, Ky. — Mike Repole, a well-known racehorse owner, has faced a lot of challenges in the Kentucky Derby. This year, he got hit with another setback: his horse, Renegade, drew the No. 1 starting position. This spot hasn’t seen a Derby winner since 1986.
Despite the odds, Renegade is making waves as a favorite with 4-1 odds. Repole, famous for creating Vitaminwater and Bodyarmor, has yet to snag a Derby win in eight tries. He’s had tough luck before, with horses scratching due to injuries right before the race.

Bob Baffert, a prominent figure in the racing world, has two entries, including a horse named Potente, a yearling valued at $2.4 million. Baffert aims for what would be his seventh Derby win, despite a recent ban due to a positive test in a previous race. Even though he faced setbacks, he returned last year with a horse that finished 15th.
The Kentucky Derby allows 20 horses, with eligibility based on points earned from various races. This system ensures only the best contenders make it to the starting gate.
Repole’s team withdrew Chip Honcho, clearing a path for another Baffert horse, Litmus Test, who drew the No. 4 spot. Four horses await as alternates, ready to step in if any scratches occur before the field is finalized, a common scenario in Derby week.
