SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Gov. Tim Walz shared his disappointment after Congress chose to go on recess without extending enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits. He highlighted the importance of these subsidies in making healthcare affordable for many Minnesotans.
“Congress could have acted to keep healthcare costs down,” he said. “Instead, they’ve opted for inaction, leaving thousands of families facing rising premiums.”
The enhanced ACA subsidies are set to expire on January 1. While House Republicans passed a healthcare bill aimed at reducing costs, it doesn’t address the crucial subsidies, a point of contention for Democrats.
In Minnesota, about 133,000 residents are enrolled in ACA marketplace coverage. Of these, roughly 83,000 depend on federal tax credits to help lower their monthly costs. According to MNsure, Minnesota’s health insurance marketplace, a person earning $30,000 a year could see their annual premium jump from $600 in 2025 to a steep $2,000 if the subsidies aren’t extended.
MNsure CEO Libby Caulum noted, “The federal government’s choices have real impacts for Minnesotans. Allowing these tax credits to expire will not just harm people’s health, but could also ripple through our whole healthcare system and economy.”
Experts emphasize the broader implications of rising healthcare costs. A recent survey revealed that nearly 70% of Americans feel overwhelmed by healthcare expenses. This sentiment showcases a growing concern that reflects a national trend of rising premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
Rep. Brad Finstad (R-MN01) defended the GOP’s recent healthcare bill, claiming it addresses the root causes of rising costs. He argued that the current system has been too uniform, negatively affecting small business owners and families.
