Pepperdine Track Kicks Off 2026 Season in Two Cities
This Friday, Pepperdine Track is all set to start its 2026 season with exciting events happening in two places. Many athletes will head to Boston for the John Thomas Terrier Classic, while others will compete in Albuquerque at the New Mexico Team Open.
Coach Lauren Floris is thrilled. “The team has prepared well this winter. They are ready to perform,” she said.
Who to Watch
In Boston, keep an eye on Lizzy Crawford. This junior, fresh off a strong cross country season, is eager to shine in the 5K. Mid-year transfer Brielle McClarnon from Miami (FL) will also debut in the 5000-meter. Her addition boosts the team’s strengths.
Other strong runners include Ashley Eagan and Grace Simpson, who are aiming for record-breaking runs in the mile.
The men’s team is equally strong. Elijah Gentry and Gordy Nilsen will race in the 5K, while Beckett Sullivan competes in the 800-meter. Parker Buchheit, who joined from Georgia Tech, will join Sullivan in the 800-meter.
In Albuquerque, freshman Adison Moore will compete in the 60 and 200-meter events. Kian Alton will represent the men in the 200, 400, and 4×400-meter relay.
What’s at Stake
Current trends in collegiate track show a strong emphasis on cross-training and athlete well-being. A recent survey highlights that nearly 70% of track athletes feel that mental health support is crucial for optimal performance. This focus on both physical and mental readiness may play a vital role in the Waves’ success this season.
Historical Context
The Pepperdine track program has roots that date back to the 1950s and has produced six national champions. Over the years, it has sent eight athletes to the Olympics and has many regional champions in its history. This legacy adds to the excitement of the new season as the Waves aim to continue a tradition of excellence.
Looking Ahead
After competing this weekend, the team will travel to Reno, Nevada on February 13. They’ll then shift their focus back to California for the rest of the season.
