The debate around Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style continues, but young T20 players like opener Abhishek Sharma are showing their support. In a thrilling match at Eden Gardens, India defeated England by seven wickets. Abhishek lit up the game with a stunning 79 runs off just 34 balls, leading India to chase down a target of 133 in just 12.5 overs.
After the match, Abhishek praised Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav for creating a relaxed environment for the younger players. “They give us the freedom to express ourselves,” he said. This positive atmosphere is something Abhishek believes is unmatched.
“I’ve never experienced a dressing room like this. We can really go out there and play our shots from the first ball,” he shared.
His approach during the match was straightforward: play like he does in the IPL. By positioning himself deep in the crease, he was able to take advantage of the short deliveries from England’s Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. “I practiced my movements beforehand and anticipated the bouncers. I executed my plans well,” he explained. He also noted the pitch was a bit tricky but felt confident about chasing 160-170 runs.
Abhishek has a great partnership with Sanju Samson. “We communicate a lot when we’re batting together. When he’s at the crease, I enjoy being at the other end,” he said.
Captain Suryakumar added that winning the toss boosted the team’s confidence. “We want to play differently and add some flair. The bowlers stuck to their plans, and our batting was the icing on the cake,” he remarked, recalling their successful performance in South Africa.
On the other side, England’s captain Jos Buttler discussed the team’s desire to play aggressively under new coach Brendon McCullum. “We want to be exciting and entertaining. We’ll adapt to the conditions as needed,” he said, expressing his enthusiasm for McCullum’s coaching style.
Buttler acknowledged the talent in his squad and mentioned that they would learn from their mistakes. “Jofra looked great and Mark Wood bowled fast. It was a bit tricky early on, but once you got through that phase, it was a good pitch for scoring,” he noted.
