24-Year-Old Suspect in Pennsylvania Officer Killings: History of Stalking Charges Uncovered

NORTH CODORUS, Pa. — In a tragic incident, a man named Matthew James Ruth, 24, ambushed police officers at his ex-girlfriend’s home, resulting in the deaths of three officers. This all happened in southern Pennsylvania on a seemingly ordinary Wednesday afternoon.

When police arrived around 2:10 p.m., they found the front door unlocked despite the ex-girlfriend and her mother leaving it locked for safety. As they entered, Ruth opened fire with an AR-style rifle, killing three officers: Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, all part of the Northern York County Regional Police Department.

A chaotic shootout followed, during which Ruth also wounded a sheriff’s deputy before being shot and killed by police. The violence stemmed from reports that Ruth had been stalking his ex-girlfriend. Her mother had alerted the authorities after noticing someone with binoculars near their home.

Ruth had a history of troubling behavior, including a past incident where he allegedly set the woman’s car on fire. He had previously evaded arrest the night before this deadly encounter, leading police to return the next day.

This tragic event began to draw comparisons to past violence against law enforcement in Pennsylvania. Notably, in 2009, three officers were also killed during an ambush by a domestic violence suspect. In 2021, firearms accounted for over 50% of officer fatalities, a significant increase compared to previous years.
