The Luzerne Foundation’s Millennium Circle has awarded the Food Dignity Movement a $25,000 grant to boost local agriculture and enhance food security in the region. This initiative aims to ensure people have dignified access to healthy food.
Food Dignity focuses on building a resilient food system. They work with farmers, students, and nonprofits to promote sustainable practices and make nutrient-rich foods available to all.
David Pedri, the president of the Luzerne Foundation, highlighted the challenge of choosing among various deserving finalists. He praised Food Dignity for its dual impact: creating consistent access to healthy food while strengthening local agriculture.
Clancy Cash Harrison, founder of Food Dignity, expressed sincere thanks. “This grant will allow us to purchase food from local farmers and distribute it to 15 nonprofits. In just three months, over 1,500 people will benefit from weekly access to nourishing meals,” Harrison shared. The grant also supports a student-led food hub at the Wilkes-Barre Area Career & Technical Center.
Surveys show that food insecurity affects millions in the U.S.; about 10.5% of households faced hunger in 2021. Initiatives like Food Dignity are crucial, especially as economic pressures mount.
The Millennium Circle gathers donors to choose a grant recipient annually, furthering impactful initiatives throughout Luzerne County.
