This year has been a rollercoaster for SpaceX’s Starship. The journey started with a couple of explosive failures, but things took a turn for the better with a nearly flawless test flight in August. Now, all eyes are on Starship’s big launch planned for October 13, 2025.

Flight 11 will be the fifth full-scale test of Starship Version 2, and it’s crucial before SpaceX unveils the bigger Version 3 in early 2026. How well this launch goes will play a big role in that timeline. The plans for the flight are mostly standard, but SpaceX is adding some new features to improve the return phase.

One exciting addition is a “dynamic banking maneuver.” This technique will help guide the rocket as it returns to Earth. Like the August flight, the Super Heavy Booster will splash down in the Gulf of Mexico, while the upper stage, known as “Ship,” will reenter the atmosphere and land in the Indian Ocean. SpaceX will light one of Ship’s Raptor engines before it descends, testing a new satellite deployer along the way.

If Flight 10 is any indication, this should go off without a hitch. The dynamic maneuver is designed to test guidance algorithms just before the landing burn.

For the Super Heavy Booster, this flight will employ a new landing sequence. Unlike Flight 10, which used a brand-new booster, this time the B15 booster is making its comeback from earlier tests. Incredibly, 24 of its 33 Raptor engines have flown before, suggesting a good chance of reliability.

The focus here is on a new burning strategy. Instead of jumping straight to three engines after firing up 13, the booster will transition through an intermediate phase using five engines. This change aims to give more safety if any engines fail.

Interestingly, SpaceX won’t be adding metallic tiles to the heat shield this time. Previously, they had removed some ceramic tiles to stress-test the vehicle. While metal tiles could be easier to make and more durable, they haven’t worked as well for heat control, showing signs of oxidation during tests. This refinement is important since perfecting the heat shield is key for SpaceX’s rapid reusability goals.
