Exciting news from Italy: researchers have discovered ancient evidence of father-daughter incest, shedding light on unusual family practices from the past. This groundbreaking find comes from a burial site in Calabria, dated back to the Bronze Age.

The burial ground, Grotta della Monaca, held the remains of 23 individuals between 1780 and 1380 B.C. Scientists analyzed these remains, aiming to learn more about the genetic makeup of the people buried there. They stumbled upon a shocking revelation: two close relatives among the skeletons.

While it’s common for families to bury their own, this case stood out. Genetic tests revealed that a teenage boy at the site was the product of an incestuous relationship. Specifically, he was identified as the son of an adult male buried there and his own daughter, the boy’s father. Such findings, while rare, raise questions about social norms in ancient times.

In their study published in *Communications Biology*, researchers noted the boy had the highest recorded levels of homozygosity — a genetic sign of inbreeding. This means his parents were closely related, setting him apart from the other individuals buried in the cave, where hereditary ties seemed less intense.

Historically, incestuous relationships can be found in various cultures but typically within a second-degree of kinship, like siblings. Parental incest, however, is much less common and often linked to higher risks for genetic disorders in offspring. Surprisingly, this boy showed no signs of rare genetic issues.

The motivations behind such unions remain unclear. The community wasn’t particularly isolated, nor did it seem to have a system favoring close family marriages for heritage or power consolidation. Alissa Mittnik, one of the study’s authors, suggested that cultural practices might have played a role, although the exact nature of these relationships is still uncertain.
