450 Chickens Donated to ACRS Food Bank: Making a Difference in Our Community

This week, volunteers delivered hot meals and essential food items to the Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) food bank. This annual event, which aligns with the holiday spirit, has been a community effort for years.

This year, the generous contributions included 450 roasted chickens from Costco. Deli manager Rachelle Hedington shared that the staff started prepping the chickens at 4 a.m. to ensure everything was ready by 9 a.m. on delivery day.

In addition, the community rallied to provide a variety of food items. American Legion Cathay Post 186 donated sticky rice dumplings, served by Joey Wang from Ton Kiang Barbecue Noodle House. Tai Tung Restaurant also contributed hot congee to warm those waiting in line. To round it off, the Seattle Chinese American Citizens Alliance donated 100-pound bags of rice to complement the other offerings.

This tradition started 16 years ago when Del Lui and Jerry Lee noticed long lines at the food bank in freezing temperatures. On impulse, they called friends for help and raised enough to buy more than 300 chickens. Today, some original volunteers still participate, energized by the joy they bring to families in need.

According to a recent report, food insecurity affects 1 in 10 households in the U.S. This makes events like the ACRS food bank donation even more critical. Local efforts like these not only provide food but also foster community bonds and support for those struggling. Community members often share their joy on social media, celebrating the connections formed through service.

The ongoing dedication of these volunteers showcases the power of community spirit, reminding us all of the warmth and kindness that can lift individuals and families during tough times.
