Duke’s track and field team has a lot to celebrate! Recently, 47 student-athletes earned spots on the 2024-25 All-ACC Academic Team. This includes 29 men and 18 women who have shown impressive skills both on the track and in the classroom.
For the men, standout athletes include Will Atkins, Aden Bandukwala, and Michael Bennett, among others. The women’s team boasts talents like Braelyn Baker and Mia Edim, highlighting a strong mix of dedication and performance.
To be selected for this honor, athletes must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA during the previous semester and their entire academic career. They also need to compete in at least half of their team’s events. This requirement emphasizes the balance of academics and athletics, a commitment that few accomplish.
Duke’s outdoor season was nothing short of extraordinary. The men’s team achieved its first-ever ACC Outdoor Championship, a thrilling milestone. Across individual and relay events, the teams combined for 10 new program records and 42 top-five marks, showcasing their hard work and talent.
In recent trends, schools are increasingly recognizing the importance of academic performance in athletics. For instance, a 2022 survey found that student-athletes with strong academic records often perform better in their sports. This focus on education reflects a growing belief in the value of being well-rounded, a view supported by many coaches and educational experts.
Later this July, the ACC will release the Honor Roll, celebrating all student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the academic year. The achievements of Duke’s track and field team in both sports and academics serve as an inspiration for student-athletes everywhere.
