The San Francisco 49ers are looking to bring back Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator. If he doesn’t land a head coaching role in the NFL, he could very well return to the team.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, Saleh has indicated that if he takes a position as a defensive coordinator this season, it will only be with the 49ers.
Saleh previously worked with San Francisco as their defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020 before moving on to become the head coach of the New York Jets. His time with the Jets saw a mixed record of 20 wins and 36 losses, leading to his dismissal after just five weeks into the current season.
This offseason, Saleh interviewed for head coaching positions with the Las Vegas Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Dallas Cowboys, but those teams seem to be pursuing other candidates.
Meanwhile, the 49ers are on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator after parting ways with Nick Sorensen, who held the position for just one season. Coach Kyle Shanahan felt that keeping Sorensen in any capacity might create an uncomfortable situation.
In addition to seeking a defensive coordinator, the 49ers are also looking for a special teams coordinator following the firing of Brian Schneider. They have interviewed Brant Boyer, who has been the special teams coordinator for the New York Jets since 2016, and worked closely with Saleh during that time.
The 49ers are aiming to fill both vacancies soon, possibly next week. This could help them check off some important tasks on their list as they prepare for the upcoming season.
