Five police officers in Chicago were struck by a vehicle while managing a large crowd during what was called an “after-prom party.” This incident occurred early Sunday morning when an 18-year-old driver ran into them while heading the wrong way on South Loomis Street.
Alderman Jason Ervin clarified that this gathering was different from traditional “teen takeovers” seen in the city. Witness accounts suggest the crowd built up after midnight, attracting hundreds of teenagers, leading to police intervention.
The officers were focused on crowd control when they were hit. Three of them were hospitalized, but all were expected to recover. Nearby resident Marcellous Johnson witnessed the chaos. He described how the driver wasn’t speeding excessively, but enough to cause serious injuries when the car struck the officers.
Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the need for parental responsibility, highlighting the importance of knowing where teenagers are during late hours. Meanwhile, police discovered a gun in the driver’s car, adding to tensions around the event.
