Canada is vast and diverse, making every province a unique experience. I’m from Alberta and mostly visited Ontario’s Greater Toronto Area (GTA) until my recent trip to Ottawa via VIA Rail. This journey opened my eyes to the charming small towns along the route and sparked a little envy for the beautiful landscapes between cities in Ontario.
Here’s what surprised me during my visit:
Early Flower Planting
Picture this: I arrived in Ottawa in early April, and to my surprise, workers were already planting flowers. In Alberta, we’re still waiting for frost-free days, often not until mid-May. This stark contrast hit me right away—Ontario’s warmer climate allows for a head start on spring gardening!
Water Everywhere
Ontario’s lakes and rivers are impressive. Driving through, it’s hard to imagine the sheer power of the waters. While Alberta has its lakes, many are small, and it’s very different to see vast, expansive bodies of water like Lake Ontario. Studies show that Ontario is home to 20% of the world’s fresh water, which enhances its natural beauty and ecology.
Payphones Still Exist
Seeing payphones made me nostalgic. In Alberta, they’ve pretty much vanished, but there they were in Ontario. It’s a small reminder of how quickly technology changes our daily lives.
Jaywalking is Common
One thing that caught my eye was the casual approach to crossing streets. Jaywalking seems to be accepted, with people of all ages darting through traffic whenever they feel it’s clear. In Alberta, there’s often a cautious approach, maybe due to our more rugged driving culture. This difference in pedestrian habits was eye-opening.
Beer in Grocery Stores
Finding beer in grocery stores was a pleasant surprise. In Alberta, this isn’t common, so it felt a little liberating! It’s interesting how each province has its own rules when it comes to selling alcohol.
On social media, I noticed a trending conversation about regional differences in Canada. Users often share humorous observations about their provinces, which helps highlight the rich diversity that makes our country unique. These quirks fuel friendly rivalries and give us a deeper appreciation for our diverse cultures. Each trip proves there’s so much more to discover in Canada, no matter where you’re from.
With such a variety of lifestyles and customs, traveling across provinces can be a delightful adventure. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, every journey holds the potential for new experiences and insights!
