Bhind: A Long-Awaited Honor for Martyrs
Recently, two families in Bhind received honors for their loved ones who fought bravely in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. This recognition from the Bangladesh government came about 54 years after their sacrifice.
Two days ago, an army vehicle pulled into Sainik Colony. Soldiers called for 70-year-old Leela Devi Goyal. Surprised to see them, she stepped outside. When asked if she was the wife of martyr Ram Lakhan Goyal, her heart swelled with pride. “Yes,” she answered softly.
The soldiers then paid their respects, bringing a box filled with heartfelt tributes—an honor letter from Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Mohammad Abdul Hamid, along with a shield and a ceremonial note. This letter was issued years ago but only recently reached the families.
Leela shared her feelings with ETV Bharat: “This honor is good, but it has come too late. I’ve lived alone since he was martyred shortly after our marriage. I learned about his death through a telegram.” She reflected on her loss, mentioning that she adopted her family’s nephew as she had no children of her own.
Bhind, known as the land of heroes, has seen many brave soldiers lay down their lives for the country. In total, 12 soldiers from this region sacrificed everything during the 1971 conflict, which was pivotal in the independence of Bangladesh.
The delay in acknowledging these sacrifices remains unclear. Army officials couldn’t explain why it took so long to recognize these heroes. Perhaps bureaucratic hurdles were to blame.
In recent years, recognizing the sacrifices of veterans has become increasingly important. A survey by the Indian Ministry of Defence in 2021 reported a growing awareness and appreciation for military contributions among younger generations. However, the long wait for honors can leave families feeling forgotten.
As we reflect on these delays, it’s crucial to ensure that such sacrifices are honored promptly. This story sheds light on the need for better communication and support for families of the fallen.
