The second, or “standard candle” approach, relies on objects like Cepheid variable stars and Type Ia supernovae, which have known brightness levels. This method shows a higher rate of expansion than the ruler method.

This disagreement is known as the Hubble tension. Researchers are quite certain that it’s not just human error, and the resolution could lead to major breakthroughs in our understanding of the universe. Some experts even believe that whoever cracks this mystery could be in line for a Nobel Prize.

Fast Radio Bursts

Discovered in 2007, fast radio bursts (FRBs) are powerful flashes of radio waves that last only milliseconds. Some FRBs release energy equivalent to 500 million suns! Most come from distant galaxies, and many only flare up once. A few repeat with a surprising pattern.
