In Lake Hughes, California, a large-scale rescue operation is underway to save hundreds of animals in distress. This is being called one of the biggest animal rescue cases in the U.S.
Late last week, officials executed a search warrant at a property where they estimated around 400 dogs and 300 cats were kept. The animals belonged to Christine De Anda of Rock N Paws Animal Rescue. Many of these animals were found in poor condition, raising significant concerns about their well-being.
The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) is leading the rescue. Over 70 staff members are on site, providing immediate medical assessments. They are working with veterinary teams to triage the animals. Those needing urgent care are being rushed to nearby veterinary hospitals. The rest will be taken to DACC centers for further evaluation.
This operation may be the largest animal seizure in U.S. history, highlighting the ongoing issue of animal welfare in the country. In recent years, there has been a notable rise in animal hoarding cases. According to a 2021 report from the Humane Society, there were over 1,000 such cases in the U.S., emphasizing the need for awareness and intervention.
The DACC is also facing challenges. With so many animals in their care, shelters may struggle with capacity. They are collaborating with other rescue groups to ensure adoptable animals find new homes quickly. Marcia Mayeda, DACC’s director, is asking for community support through adoptions and donations to their foundation.
