The New Orleans Saints have officially entered a new chapter after moving on from Derek Carr. Now, it’s time to find the next starting quarterback through open competition.
The contenders include rookie Tyler Shough and returning players Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler. Coach Kellen Moore met with reporters recently and shared his thoughts on the competition.
“We’re going to let all three of these guys roll,” Moore stated. “They’ve all earned this opportunity. We’ll see how Jake, Spencer, and Tyler perform.”
Moore believes that during the preseason, one of these quarterbacks will stand out and secure the starting role. A crucial aspect will be how well they manage the offense and communicate with their teammates.
“The quarterback is a leader,” Moore emphasized. “They need to take ownership, especially during training camp and preseason games. That’s when their true character comes out.”
Shough recently had his first opportunity to impress during rookie minicamp, where he performed “excellent” during two seven-on-seven sessions. This week, he and the other rookies will join the veterans for the ongoing offseason program.
As for adding a veteran quarterback, Moore mentioned they are keeping an eye on any opportunities that may arise. Currently, Haener, a fourth-round pick in 2023, has had limited experience with one start in eight games. He completed 18 of 39 passes for 226 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Meanwhile, Rattler, picked in the fifth round in 2024, played in seven games and started six, throwing for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Shough comes into this mix as the 40th pick in the 2025 draft. Moore’s experience with rookie quarterbacks adds an interesting angle to this competition. When he was in Dallas, a fourth-round pick named Dak Prescott stepped up after Tony Romo got injured and transformed into a franchise player almost instantly.
This dynamic should make for an exciting preseason as fans and analysts alike watch closely to see who will rise to the challenge. The Saints are looking for a quarterback who can not only throw well but also inspire and lead the team on and off the field.
