Bindi Irwin Undergoes Emergency Surgery, Regrets Missing Annual Steve Irwin Gala

Bindi Irwin recently faced a sudden health scare that kept her from a family gala. The 26-year-old underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix. Her brother, Robert Irwin, shared the news during their late father’s annual gala in Las Vegas.

“She’s going to be OK, but surgery was unexpected,” Robert told People. “Health comes first, after all.”

Bindi had recently battled endometriosis and was initially excited to attend the event. Despite her discomfort, she planned to join the family celebration but ultimately had to prioritize her health when doctors advised that her appendix needed to be removed.

“She was in pain but wanted to be there,” Robert explained. “The surgeon had other ideas.” He added that Bindi’s mom, Terri Irwin, stayed behind to support her recovery.

Bindi expressed disappointment at missing the gala, describing her feelings as “devastating.” However, she remains an outspoken advocate for women’s health. After Bindi’s endometriosis diagnosis, many women have joined her in sharing their own struggles with the condition, which affects about 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, according to the CDC.

The annual Steve Irwin Gala raises funds for wildlife conservation in honor of their father, who passed away in 2006. Bindi often speaks about his legacy and her mission to protect wildlife. Just a day before the surgery, she shared joyful moments with her family in Las Vegas, which made the health setback even more challenging. “Khaki by day, Bellagio chic by night!” she wrote online, showcasing her commitment to conservation.

During a February podcast episode, Bindi opened up about her endometriosis journey, detailing her decade-long struggle to get diagnosed. “I was misdiagnosed multiple times,” she shared. “It snowballed over years. The pain was debilitating.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding her future health, Bindi noted, “There’s no cure for endometriosis, but surgery gives hope for a better life.” She’s hopeful that, for now, she can enjoy life without the relentless pain she endured.
