Captivating Journey: Stunning Photos from SFSU to the University of Birmingham

I’m really missing home, especially the friendliness of people there. In my current city, it’s rare for strangers to strike up a conversation. Most folks stick to their circles, only stepping out if they’re extroverted.

The University of Birmingham feels quite different from San Francisco State University. While UoB is less politically active, it has a notable international student presence. UoB’s focus on sports and science adds to its vibrant community. Plus, the campus, with its beautiful red brick and Neo-Gothic architecture, is much larger and feels traditional—almost like something out of a movie.

Academically, the differences are striking. UoB is ranked #94 globally according to US News & World Report, while SFSU lags significantly at #1494. Here, I take part in lectures with about 100 students and smaller seminars that allow for more interaction. This blend makes learning engaging, though it can feel daunting with only two assessments shaping my final grade. The grading is tough too; you need a 40% to pass. High marks often indicate work that could be published.

One thing I love is the lack of busywork. However, the pressure of having my entire grade depend on a couple of assignments can be intimidating. Sometimes, I miss the smaller class sizes back home.

Living by the lake at Mason in the Vale Village is a highlight. The view from my kitchen is breathtaking, with green trees and water nearby. I enjoy jogging, reading, and practicing yoga there. Friends often gather for barbecues, making it a perfect hangout spot.

Aside from academics and my living situation, I’ve been exploring my surroundings. Stratford-upon-Avon, only an hour away, is Shakespeare’s birthplace and a beautiful place for a day trip. The local culture is rich, with plenty of events, like poetry slams, that showcase emerging talent. Recently, I attended the UK National University Poetry Slam finals. The depth of the poetry I heard truly moved me.

The area around the university has its unique charm too. There’s a great coffee shop called Grounded, where I often do my coursework. They offer board games and yoga classes, making it a perfect community spot.

In summary, life here has its ups and downs. I am challenged academically and enjoy a vibrant community. But the familiarity of home and the easygoing nature of conversations with strangers are what I miss most.
