Texas A&M claimed the top seed in the NCAA Division I softball tournament, just ahead of four-time champions Oklahoma. This achievement highlights the strength of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), which has seven teams ranked in the top eight.
Oklahoma won the SEC regular-season title, finishing just a game ahead of Texas A&M. Interestingly, both teams shared the conference tournament title after the championship match was canceled due to bad weather.
The SEC teams include Florida as the No. 3 seed, fresh off a national semifinal appearance last year, and No. 4 seed Arkansas. Oklahoma State, notable for five consecutive Women’s College World Series appearances, is also competing in the same regional as Arkansas.
The final eight teams will meet in Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series from May 29 to June 5. Florida State stands out as the top-seeded team from outside the SEC, holding the No. 5 seed after clinching the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular-season title. Florida State has been a strong contender, winning the national title in 2018 and finishing as runners-up in 2021 and 2023.
Behind Florida State are three more SEC teams. Texas, who has finished as national runner-up twice in the past three years, is the No. 6 seed. Tennessee comes in at No. 7, featuring standout pitcher Karlyn Pickens. Rounding out the top eight is South Carolina, which was surprisingly picked last in the SEC preseason poll but has exceeded expectations.
UCLA, now hosting a regional as the No. 9 seed, is in its first year as a Big Ten member. Meanwhile, No. 10 seed LSU faces a stiff challenge. Their regional includes Nebraska, which boasts former Oklahoma pitcher Jordyn Bahl, the Most Outstanding Player of the World Series in 2023.
Clemson, coming off an ACC tournament championship win against Florida State, is ranked No. 11. Following them, No. 12 Texas Tech shines with NiJaree Canady, the reigning National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Year, who did not allow any runs during 16 2/3 innings at the Big 12 Tournament.
Arizona, which lost to Texas Tech in that Big 12 title game, is the No. 13 seed. Duke, which made its Women’s College World Series debut last year, leads a regional this season as the No. 14 seed. Alabama is ranked No. 15, while Oregon, the Big Ten regular-season champion, rounds out the top 16 seeds.
This tournament showcases not just individual talent but the competitive spirit of collegiate softball. It’s a testament to how sport continually evolves while honoring past traditions and rivalries.
