Stay Tuned: Live Updates on Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Trial – Opening Statements in High-Stakes Sex Trafficking Case Coming Soon!

At a recent jury selection for the Sean Combs trial, Judge Arun Subramanian shared a light-hearted moment. He joked about a long list of celebrities that could come up during the hearings, saying it felt like reading an appendix from “The Lord of the Rings.” This moment stood out in an otherwise serious setting.

Judge Subramanian has only been a federal judge for two years, yet he’s already overseeing one of the most high-profile trials in the United States. Appointed by President Biden in 2022 and confirmed in March 2023, he has built an impressive career. Born in Pittsburgh in 1979 to Indian immigrants, he studied law at Columbia after earning his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University.

His legal experience is extensive. He clerked for two federal judges in New York and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Supreme Court. By 31, he became the youngest partner at the law firm Susman Godfrey. Senator Chuck Schumer praised him during his confirmation hearing, calling him a “steadfast consumer protection expert” who had defended victims of child trafficking and excelled in bankruptcy law.

Alongside the Combs case, Subramanian is also handling a significant antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation, known for owning Ticketmaster. The lawsuit aims to break up the company due to its dominance in the live entertainment industry, with a trial tentatively set for 2026.

Judge Subramanian values efficiency. During jury selection, he encouraged both sides to indicate when they needed breaks, promising to keep the process moving without interruptions. “I’m a machine,” he quipped, highlighting his focus on accountability.

Notably, he is the first person of South Asian descent to serve as a judge in the Southern District of New York. He underscored this milestone at his confirmation hearing, stating, “One generation later, his son is sitting before this honorable committee. That is the American dream.”

In a speech to Columbia Law alumni, he humorously noted that, as “the new kid” on the bench, he hosted the Southern District’s first-ever karaoke event, unknowingly tapping into a hidden enthusiasm for singing among his colleagues.

This blend of professionalism and humor reflects Judge Subramanian’s unique approach to his role, balancing the seriousness of the court with a personable touch.
