CaroMont Health Foundation Unveils the 2025 Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship Winner: Celebrating Tomorrow’s Healthcare Leaders

CaroMont Health Foundation recently honored Olivia Michael, a senior at Stuart W. Cramer High School, with the prestigious Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship for 2025. After a rigorous selection process, she emerged as the ideal candidate. This scholarship offers up to $24,000 each year for four years, supporting her studies in healthcare.

Mary Grace Bean, Director of the CaroMont Health Foundation, emphasized the foundation’s dedication to nurturing healthcare talent in Gaston County. "Olivia’s remarkable academic achievements, paired with her genuine compassion and drive to help others, make her a fantastic future healthcare provider," said Bean. Michael will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Olivia is not just an outstanding student; she’s a leader too. As President of her school’s Health Occupations Students of America Chapter, she has made a significant impact. Her volunteer work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and The Birthplace at CaroMont Health reflects her commitment to patient care, where she supports nursing staff and comforts families during pivotal life events.

Jay Nutter, Chair of the CaroMont Health Foundation Scholarships Advisory Board, noted that this year’s applicants showcased remarkable talent and commitment to healthcare. "Olivia stood out with her blend of curiosity and empathy. Her future looks bright, both in her career and in the lives she’ll touch," he said.

The Shovelin Scholarship is funded by The W. Duke Kimbrell Family Foundation in honor of former CaroMont Health CEO Wayne Shovelin. Along with financial support, Olivia will participate in three paid summer internships at CaroMont Health. These internships will provide her with hands-on experience, helping her explore various healthcare careers.

Investing in future healthcare leaders is crucial. According to a recent report from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, nursing schools in the U.S. are struggling to meet the growing demand for nurses, which is projected to increase by 15% by 2026. Scholarships like Shovelin’s are vital in encouraging talented individuals like Olivia to enter this essential field.
