Ohio University Zanesville has recently earned the designation of “Opportunity College and University” from the Carnegie Classifications. This is a significant achievement, as fewer than 300 universities across the U.S. hold this title. Additionally, it has been recognized as a “Special Focus” institution due to its high number of graduates in nursing and health professions.

An “Opportunity College” is one that helps students exceed earnings expectations, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. The “Special Focus” label is awarded to universities where most degrees are concentrated in a single area of study, like nursing.

These new classifications show our commitment to providing valuable education for high-demand careers.”

Thanks to a generous donation from the J.W. & M.H. Straker Charitable Foundation in 2023, the campus is now better equipped to train skilled nurses. Graduates from OHIO’s nursing program are highly regarded and often find jobs in healthcare settings across Ohio and beyond. The program focuses on practical, hands-on experiences and has a strong track record of high NCLEX pass rates, ensuring students are well-prepared for their careers.

Around 61% of graduates from Ohio University Zanesville earn degrees in nursing or health-related fields, while over 17% focus on general studies. Importantly, 36% of students receive Pell Grants. Many of these students are eligible for the OHIO Regional Promise Program, which covers tuition and mandatory fees for full-time, Pell-eligible freshmen with at least a 3.0 high school GPA.
