Cole Brauer made history as the first American woman to sail solo nonstop around the globe. She shared her remarkable journey with the graduating class of Roger Williams University (RWU) on May 16, 2025, inspiring them with tales of resilience and bravery. Brauer began her story as a struggling high school student who found her spark in college.

Reflecting on her transformation, Brauer said, “I became empowered in learning for the first time.” She had a hunger for growth that led her all the way to Hawaii, where she reached out to the sailing team, a decision that changed her life. “These tiny, uncomfortable moments started an incredible journey,” she observed, which has now included an 11-year sailing career, connecting with amazing people, and witnessing stunning parts of the world.

In 2023, Brauer took part in the Global Solo Challenge, finishing second overall and becoming one of only eight women to complete the race. Despite facing serious challenges, like cracking a rib and battling extreme dehydration, she persevered. Her journey resonates with many, showing that determination can lead to incredible achievements.

During her address, Brauer reminded graduates that the world they are entering will be full of change. “Restarts are good,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of embracing uncertainty. “Fighting for what you believe in gives us purpose.” Her message encouraged students to stay open-minded and pursue their passions, even in the face of challenges.

The Commencement honored 1,269 graduates, celebrating diverse achievements across various fields. RWU President Ioannis N.
