Operatic voices aren’t typical at Eurovision, but JJ is changing that as Austria’s representative. At just 24, he brings a unique style with his song "Wasted Love." JJ, whose real name is Johannes Pietsch, is a countertenor. This means his voice is similar to a female mezzo-soprano. He currently sings in the choir at the Vienna State Opera, where he has performed in productions like Mozart’s "The Magic Flute."

His goal at Eurovision? To spark interest in classical music among a broader audience. He believes mixing operatic sounds with pop, what he calls "popera," could lead to exciting new music styles. “It could be fun,” he said.

Growing up in Dubai until age 15, JJ started his classical training after moving to Austria. His father recognized his high voice and encouraged him to try singing pieces like the “Queen of the Night” aria. Inspired by greats like Maria Callas, he immersed himself in opera.

Support for JJ is strong within Vienna’s opera community. Bogdan Roscic, the general director of the Vienna State Opera, expressed enthusiasm for his participation but mentioned he wouldn’t watch Eurovision, still viewing it as a rather silly event.

Interestingly, a recent survey by the European Broadcasting Union found that interest in Eurovision is growing, especially among younger audiences. In 2023, 30% of viewers reported discovering new genres through the show, demonstrating the evolving nature of music consumption today.

JJ’s journey reflects a blend of tradition and modernity, resonating with those who appreciate both classical and pop music. His performance may pave the way for more artists to explore this intersection in the future.
