Journalism’s Stunning Comeback: How It Triumphed in the 150th Preakness Stakes

On Saturday, Journalism staged an incredible comeback to win the 150th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. Though initially lagging in sixth place, the horse surprised everyone by kicking it into gear in the final stretch.

Jockey Umberto Rispoli, riding Journalism, expressed his disbelief. "I still can’t believe what this horse did today," he said, emotional after securing his first Triple Crown race win. He praised Journalism, saying, "It’s a pleasure, a privilege to ride a horse like him."

Trainer Michael McCarthy, who won his second Triple Crown race, shared his thoughts after the victory. He mentioned that he had prepared himself for another near-miss but was overjoyed by the outcome. "Just goes to show the testament that this horse has," he said.

Throughout the irregular 1 and 3/16th mile race, Journalism stayed close to the rail, remaining patient despite other opportunities to move outside. Their strategy paid off as they maneuvered past competitors in a thrilling final push. There was some jostling, leading to an inquiry post-race, but ultimately no changes were made.

Before the race, Journalism had even odds to win. For spectators, it was an exciting finale, with a Journalism-Gosger exacta paying out $33.80 on a $2 bet. The trifecta netted $73.50 for a $1 bet.

Behind this victory is a story of resilience. McCarthy and his family faced challenges, living temporarily with his in-laws due to a fire in Altadena. "This is for Altadena," he said, highlighting the meaning behind their struggle.

Aron Wellman, part-owner of Journalism, described the horse as "extremely special." He noted Journalism’s intelligence as a rare trait in racing.

Historically, favorites have struggled in this event, with seven of the last nine Derby favorites failing when they raced in the Preakness. But Journalism broke that trend this time.

The emotional win not only added another trophy to McCarthy’s collection but also underscored the special bond between them. As the dust settles, it’s not just a victory; it’s a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity.
